Paying with a gift card and another payment method

Whether customers can pay part of an order with a Wrapped gift card and the rest by card or cash, what happens to the leftover balance, and where to find the steps for Shopify, Lightspeed, Square, Heartland and the Redeem app.

Yes, customers can usually pay part of an order with a gift card and the rest with another payment method, such as a credit card or cash. Wrapped uses each platform's own gift cards (Shopify gift cards, Lightspeed gift cards and so on), so what's possible at the register or checkout, including splitting a payment or using more than one gift card, is decided by that platform. Whatever the customer doesn't spend stays on the card and syncs to your other sales channels.

How a partial payment works

  1. The customer pays part of the order with their gift card and the rest another way.
  2. The platform takes the gift card amount off the card and completes the sale.
  3. Wrapped records a redemption for the amount used, for example "Gift card redeemed for $20.00 in … order #1050".
  4. Wrapped pushes the remaining balance to your other sales channels, usually within a few minutes, and updates the customer's wallet pass.
OrderGift card balanceWhat happens
$80$50$50 comes off the card (balance $0). The customer pays $30 another way.
$30$50$30 comes off the card. $20 stays on it for next time.
$30, customer wants to use only $10 of the card$50Where the platform lets staff enter the amount, $10 comes off and $40 stays. The customer pays $20 another way.

The gift card amount only comes off in Wrapped once the sale is completed or paid. A parked or open sale isn't processed until it's closed.

Common questions

Can a customer use two gift cards on one order?

It depends on the platform. Many registers let staff add a second gift card payment after the first. Check the steps for your sales channel above.

The gift card didn't cover the order and the checkout failed

At a Shopify checkout, the payment and its error messages come from Shopify. Check the card's balance in Wrapped and see Gift cards at Shopify checkout. At a register, take the gift card for its full balance first, then take the rest another way.

Does the leftover balance work everywhere?

Yes. Once Wrapped has synced the new balance, the remaining amount can be spent in any of your connected sales channels.

What if the order with a split payment is refunded?

The refund is handled by the platform where the customer paid. A refund that goes back onto the gift card as part of the order is picked up by Wrapped and synced. See Refund to a gift card in Shopify or the refund article for your POS.

Can the balance go negative with split payments?

Not from a normal split payment. A card can only go below zero if it's used in two places at almost the same time. See What happens if a card is used in two places at the same time.
