Once Square is connected, staff sell and accept gift cards in Square exactly as they do today, using Square's own gift card features. Wrapped picks up each completed sale, so a card sold in Square works in your other channels, and a Wrapped gift card from your web store, emails or other channels can be spent in Square. The one difference: Square's scanner only recognises Square's own gift card barcodes, so staff type the code of a gift card issued by Wrapped.
Selling a gift card in Square
- Sell a Square gift card (physical or digital) in Square as you normally do, with the amount the customer wants.
- To have the gift card emailed, attach a customer with an email address to the gift card or the sale.
- Take payment and complete the sale.
After the sale is completed, usually within a few minutes:
- The gift card appears in Wrapped under Gift cards › All gift cards, with its Square gift card number as the code.
- Wrapped emails it to the customer's email address, if there is one, using your gift card email design.
- The card is created in your other connected channels (subject to their code rules), so it can be spent anywhere.
- Adding more value to an existing Square gift card on a completed sale shows in Wrapped as a top-up.
Sales that are still open in Square aren't processed until they're completed.
Redeeming a gift card in Square
- Ring up the sale as normal and choose to pay with a gift card.
- Scan the card if it's a Square gift card. For a gift card issued by Wrapped (from an email, a wallet pass, your web store or another channel), type the code.
- Take the amount from the gift card. If the balance doesn't cover the sale, take the rest with another payment method.
- Complete the sale.
Once the sale is completed, Wrapped records the redemption on the gift card's timeline and sends the new balance to your other channels. If Square reports the gift card payment as pending, Wrapped checks again shortly afterwards, so the redemption usually appears in Wrapped within a few minutes.
If a Wrapped gift card isn't found in Square, open it in Wrapped and look for a sync error for Square. The usual cause is a code Square doesn't accept, such as one with dashes (see Connect Square). The card still works in your other channels.
Refunds, top-ups and corrections
| Situation | What to do | What Wrapped does |
|---|---|---|
| Customer returns items bought with a gift card, and you refund onto the gift card in Square | Refund in Square as normal | Updates the card's balance in Wrapped to match Square, and sends it to your other channels |
| Customer tops up a Square gift card | Load it on a sale in Square and complete the sale | Records a top-up |
| A balance is wrong | Adjust it in Wrapped with Adjust balance | Sends the corrected balance to Square and every other channel |
| A gift card sale was a mistake | Void the card in Wrapped (see Void or delete a gift card) | Sets the balance to $0 in Square and your other channels |
Square charges its load fee on value added to Square gift cards, including top-ups and balance increases that Wrapped passes to Square (see Connect Square).
Common questions
Why won't Square scan the barcode in our gift card email?
Square's scanner recognises Square's own gift card barcodes. Gift cards issued by Wrapped have codes Wrapped created, so type the code instead.
Can a customer pay part with a gift card and part with a card?
Yes. Square lets you take part of the payment from the gift card and the rest another way. What's possible at checkout is decided by Square (see Paying with a gift card and another payment method).
Can a Square gift card be used on my online store?
Yes, if your online store is connected to Wrapped. Once a Square gift card is sold and synced, it's a Wrapped gift card that works in every connected channel whose code rules its number meets.
Does the customer get an updated balance email after spending in Square?
When Wrapped records a redemption from Square and sends the new balance to your channels, it also sends the gift card updated email to the card's email address, if it has one.
A gift card we sold before connecting Square isn't in Wrapped. What do we do?
Existing Square gift cards aren't imported automatically, and spending one doesn't bring it in. See Connect Square for how to import them.
