To change a gift card's balance, open the card and click Adjust balance, enter the New balance and click Apply. Wrapped records the difference as a manual adjustment and pushes the new balance to every connected sales channel, such as Shopify and Lightspeed, in the background, usually within a few minutes. This is the right way to top up a card, take value off, or correct a balance so that every channel stays in step.
Only Owners and Admins can adjust balances.
Adjust a balance
- Go to Gift cards › All gift cards and search for the card by its full code or last four characters. See Find a gift card.
- Click the code. In the quick view, click Adjust balance (or click Open, then Adjust balance at the top right of the card's page).
- The dialog shows the Current balance. Enter the New balance, the total the card should have after the change, not the amount to add. Wrapped shows "Adds …" or "Removes …" underneath so you can check.
- Optionally enter a Reason, for example "Goodwill credit". It's shown in the card's activity.
- Tick Email the customer their new balance if you want Wrapped to email them.
- Click Apply.
You'll see "Balance updated." and the card's activity shows an entry such as "$10.00 adjustment applied by you@yourbusiness.com from dashboard for 'Goodwill credit'".
What happens when you apply an adjustment
| Where | What happens |
|---|---|
| Wrapped | The balance changes straight away. An adjustment is recorded with your email and reason. Adding value also increases the card's Total issued; removing value doesn't reduce it. |
| Every connected sales channel | Wrapped sets the card's balance in each channel (Shopify, Lightspeed and the rest) to the new Wrapped balance. Each channel gets its own "Updated balance to … in …" entry in the activity. |
| Customer email | Only if you ticked Email the customer their new balance, the card has a recipient email, emails are on for the card, and the new balance is more than $0. |
| Wallet passes | Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes update with the new balance. |
| Balance alerts | If the card has balance alerts turned on, that address is emailed. |
| Reports | The adjustment appears in reports within about 2 hours. |
If a channel can't be updated, the card shows a sync error with the reason. See Fixing gift card sync errors.
Limits
- The new balance can't be less than $0. The dialog shows "Enter an amount of 0 or more."
- Vouchers from your web store can't be adjusted. They're redeemed in full with Redeem. See Redeeming vouchers.
- A card with a $0 starting value isn't in your sales channels yet. Adding value creates it there and activates it.
Adding value to a voided, deleted or expired card
Adding value to a voided, deleted or expired card makes it active again: its activity shows "Reactivated gift card from Disabled after top-up of …" (or Deleted, or Expired), and the new balance is pushed to your sales channels. A reactivated card counts toward your gift card allowance again in that billing period.
For an expired card, first change its expiry to a future date (… menu › Change expiry), otherwise the nightly expiry check expires it again. See Gift card expiry.
If the balance was changed directly in a sales channel
Only balance changes that belong to an order or sale sync into Wrapped automatically, such as a Shopify checkout or a Lightspeed register sale. Changing a card's balance directly in Shopify admin, or through Shopify's Admin API (for example giftCardDebit or giftCardCredit), is not picked up by Wrapped. The same applies to editing a balance by hand in any other channel.
Wrapped's balance is the one that counts: the next time the card syncs, each channel is set back to the Wrapped balance. To correct a balance so every channel stays in step:
- adjust it in Wrapped with Adjust balance, or
- use the Wrapped API (Pro plan and above). See The Wrapped API.
If you use Shopify and you'd rather take the balance Shopify currently has, open the card and choose … › Import latest balance from Shopify. Wrapped records the difference as an adjustment and pushes that balance to your other channels.
Common questions
Does an adjustment sync to Shopify and Lightspeed?
Yes. Wrapped pushes the new balance to every connected, enabled sales channel. It starts as soon as you click Apply and usually lands within a few minutes. Check the card's activity for an "Updated balance to …" entry for each channel.
I changed the balance in Shopify. Will Wrapped update?
No. Changes made directly in Shopify admin aren't picked up, and the next sync sets Shopify back to the Wrapped balance. Adjust the balance in Wrapped instead, or use Import latest balance from Shopify if Shopify's balance is the correct one.
Can I undo an adjustment?
Not with a button. Make another adjustment back to the balance you want. Both adjustments stay in the card's history.
Does topping up a card count toward my plan?
Topping up an active card doesn't. Adding value to a voided, deleted or expired card reactivates it, and that counts in the billing period it's reactivated. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
Which email does the customer get?
The "gift card updated" email, showing the new balance. If the new balance happens to equal the card's original value, Wrapped sends the gift card issued email instead. No email is sent when the new balance is $0.
The balance went below zero
A card can go negative if it's used in two places at once. Adjust it to the correct amount (usually $0). See Negative balances.
