Connect Square

How to connect Square to Wrapped, choose the location for gift card activity, set a code format Square accepts, what syncs with Square's own gift cards, and the load fee Square charges on value added to Square gift cards.

Updated September 19, 2026

Connecting Square takes a few minutes: you sign in to Square from Wrapped, allow access, turn the sales channel on and check the location it uses. Wrapped works with Square's own gift cards, so a card sold in Square can be spent in any of your other channels, and a Wrapped gift card can be spent in Square. The Square integration is labelled Beta in Wrapped.

Square charges a fee on value added to Square gift cards, and that includes every gift card Wrapped creates in Square (dashboard, web store, other channels, imports and batches) and every balance increase Wrapped passes to Square. Square sets and collects this fee, not Wrapped. Read Square's load fee below before you connect.

Before you start

  • You need to be an Owner or Admin in Wrapped.
  • Sign in to Square as the account owner or a team member who can approve apps.
  • Check your gift card code format. Square only accepts some codes (see below).

Connect your Square account

    1. In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels (open) and select Add sales channel.
    2. Choose Square.
    3. Sign in to Square and allow Wrapped access. Wrapped asks to read and write gift cards and to read orders, payments, customers, team members and your business profile.
    4. You're returned to Sales channels with the message "Square connected."
    5. Turn on the switch next to your Square channel. It starts Disabled.
    6. Select Settings on the channel and check Location for gift card activity (see below), then select Save.
    7. Select Test connection in the same window. You should see "Connected to" followed by your business name.

There's nothing to install in Square. Square tells Wrapped about gift card activity and orders automatically once you've approved access.

Location for gift card activity

When Wrapped creates a gift card in Square or changes a balance there, Square records it against one of your locations. Wrapped picks your first location when you connect. Change it in the channel's Settings if you'd like the activity recorded somewhere else.

This doesn't limit where cards can be used: gift cards still work at every Square location.

Codes Square accepts

Wrapped creates each gift card in Square with the same code it has in Wrapped. Square only accepts codes of 8 to 20 letters or numbers, with no dashes or other symbols, and rejects codes that look like payment card numbers. Wrapped's default code format includes dashes, so change it before you issue gift cards.

We recommend numbers only: Square can only produce barcodes and QR codes for numeric codes, and your staff type codes at the register. Set this in Settings › Gift card rules › Code format (open):

SettingUse
Length16
Add a dash every four charactersOff
Characters to use0123456789

Changing the code format only affects new gift cards. A card whose code Square won't accept, such as an imported physical card with dashes, stays in Wrapped and works in your other channels, but shows a sync error for Square (see Fixing gift card sync errors). See also Gift card code format and each platform's rules.

What syncs

What happensResult
A Square gift card is sold or loaded on a completed Square saleThe card is created in Wrapped with its Square gift card number (or topped up) and made available in your other channels
A gift card is used to pay on a completed Square saleThe redemption is recorded in Wrapped and the new balance goes to your other channels
A gift card is issued in Wrapped or another channelWrapped creates a digital Square gift card with the same code and activates it with the balance
A balance goes up or down in Wrapped or another channelWrapped adjusts the Square gift card to match
A gift card is voided or deleted in WrappedWrapped sets its balance to $0 in Square

Only sales completed after you connected are processed. If a gift card payment is still pending when Square first reports it, Wrapped checks again a little later, so a redemption usually appears in Wrapped within a few minutes of the sale closing.

To correct a balance, adjust it in Wrapped, not in the Square Dashboard, so every channel stays in step (see Adjust a gift card's balance).

Square's load fee

Square charges a load fee on the value added to a Square gift card. Square's documentation lists it as a percentage of the amount added (2.5% in Australia, Canada and the United States at the time of writing, with no load fee on Square's Premium plan), charged when a card is activated, loaded or has its balance increased. Redemptions have no load fee. Square deducts the fee from your Square payouts. Check Square's current pricing for your country and plan.

With Wrapped connected, the fee applies to:

  • gift cards sold in Square
  • every gift card Wrapped creates in Square: cards issued from the dashboard, sold on your web store or in another channel, imported, or created in a batch
  • balance increases Wrapped passes to Square, such as top-ups, refunds to a gift card, or bonus credit added in Wrapped

Wrapped doesn't charge or receive any part of this fee.

Gift cards you already have in Square

Square gift cards that existed before you connected aren't imported automatically. A card is brought into Wrapped when it's next loaded in Square, but spending an existing card that isn't in Wrapped doesn't bring it in. Import your active Square gift cards so they work everywhere (see Import existing gift cards from a CSV file), or contact the Wrapped team (see Getting help).

Common questions

Can staff scan a Wrapped gift card in Square?

Square's scanner recognises barcodes on Square's own gift cards. For gift cards issued by Wrapped, staff should type the code. See Selling and redeeming gift cards with Square.

Do I need a separate channel for each Square location?

No. One connection covers your Square account and all its locations.

Does Square charge the load fee on gift cards I import into Wrapped?

Yes. When Wrapped creates an imported card in Square with a balance, Square treats it as activating the card.

Why does the Square channel say Beta?

Wrapped labels the Square integration as beta. If anything doesn't behave as described here, contact the Wrapped team (see Getting help).
