Gift cards at Shopify checkout: split payments and limits

How customers pay with Wrapped gift cards at your Shopify checkout - entering the code, paying the rest with a card, using several gift cards, currencies, errors at checkout - and which of these Shopify controls rather than Wrapped.

Updated September 19, 2026

Yes, customers can pay part of a Shopify order with a Wrapped gift card and the rest with another payment method, such as a credit card. Wrapped gift cards are Shopify's own gift cards, so everything at checkout, including split payments, several gift cards on one order, currency conversion and any error messages, is handled by Shopify. Wrapped records the redemption once Shopify marks the order paid.

How customers pay with a gift card

  1. At your Shopify checkout, the customer enters the gift card code in the discount code or gift card field and applies it.
  2. Shopify applies the card's balance to the order total.
  3. If the balance doesn't cover the total, Shopify asks for another payment method for the rest. The customer can also add another gift card.
  4. When the order is paid, Wrapped records the amount taken from each Wrapped gift card and pushes the new balance to your other sales channels, usually within a few minutes.

What Shopify allows

QuestionAnswer
Gift card plus a credit card or other payment methodYes. Shopify asks for another payment method when the card doesn't cover the order.
More than one gift card on an orderYes. Shopify allows several gift cards on one order.
Customer shopping in another currencyStore-currency gift cards can be used; Shopify converts the balance at checkout.
Gift card with a zero balance, expired or deactivatedShopify won't accept it.
Using a gift card to buy one of Shopify's own gift card productsNot allowed by Shopify.

The Wrapped Digital Gift Card product is a normal Shopify product rather than a Shopify gift card product, so Shopify's rules for its own gift card products may not apply to it. If you don't want discount codes or gift cards used on gift card purchases, test your checkout and set your discounts to exclude the product. See Sell digital gift cards on your Shopify store.

Wrapped doesn't add its own limits at Shopify checkout, and Wrapped can't change what Shopify's checkout allows.

When the checkout shows an error

Errors at a Shopify checkout come from Shopify, not Wrapped. The most common causes:

What Wrapped records

  • Only paid orders. The redemption is recorded when Shopify marks the order Paid. If an order is left partially paid, the redemption waits until it's paid in full.
  • The amount taken from each card. Each Wrapped gift card on the order gets its own redemption on its timeline, linked to the order number.
  • Refunds back to the card. If you refund the order to the gift card in Shopify, Wrapped updates the balance to match. See Refund to a gift card in Shopify.
  • Cards Wrapped doesn't know about aren't recorded. Older gift cards created in Shopify need importing first. See Bring existing Shopify gift cards into Wrapped.

Common questions

Can a customer use the same gift card online and in store at the same time?

Each redemption is recorded as it happens, so if a card is used in two places within moments, its balance can go negative. See What happens if a card is used in two places at the same time.

Does the gift card pay for shipping and tax?

Shopify applies gift cards to the order total, so yes, a gift card can pay for shipping and tax.

Can customers pay with their gift card in Shop Pay or express checkout?

That's decided by Shopify's checkout. Check Shopify's help center for the current options.

Is this the same in Shopify POS?

Staff can take a gift card and then another payment method at the register too. See Selling and redeeming gift cards in Shopify POS.
