Bring existing Shopify gift cards into Wrapped

Why Shopify gift cards created outside Wrapped can't be bulk-imported, and the ways to bring each one in - the check balance page, an "Activate gift card" link in Shopify's gift card emails, and lookups at the register - plus exactly what Wrapped imports.

Updated September 19, 2026

Wrapped can't bulk-import gift cards that were created in Shopify, because Shopify only shares the last 4 characters of an existing code. Instead, each card is brought in the first time someone uses its full code with Wrapped: a customer checks it on your check balance page, clicks an Activate gift card link you add to Shopify's gift card emails, or staff look it up at a connected register. Wrapped then imports the card with its current Shopify balance and syncs it to your other sales channels.

Which gift cards need this

Any Shopify gift card Wrapped didn't create, including cards:

  • that existed before you connected Shopify,
  • created manually in the Shopify admin,
  • sold with one of Shopify's own gift card products (online or in Shopify POS, including physical cards),
  • issued by returns apps such as Loop, PostCo or ReturnGo, or by Shopify's own refund to gift card.

Until one of these cards is imported, it only works in Shopify, and Wrapped doesn't record redemptions made with it. Gift cards bought from the Wrapped Digital Gift Card product, or issued in Wrapped, are already in Wrapped and don't need importing.

If you use Loop Returns, its Wrapped integration can issue Wrapped gift cards directly. See Loop Returns integration.

Option 1: the check balance page

When anyone enters a Shopify gift card code on your check balance page, Wrapped finds the card in Shopify and imports it. Share the page with customers, add it to your website (Add a gift card balance checker to your Shopify store), or have staff enter a customer's code there when the card doesn't work in store.

Shopify emails the customer when it creates a gift card (the New gift card notification), and can email a receipt when a customer sends a gift card to a recipient (Gift card receipt). You can change the button in those emails so it opens the card through Wrapped, which imports it.

    1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings › Notifications › Customer notifications, and under Gift cards open New gift card.
    2. Select Edit code. Copy the existing code somewhere safe first so you can restore it.
    3. Find every {{ gift_card.url }} and replace it with: https://manage.wrappedgiftcards.com/Preview/ShopifyGiftCard?shopifyDomain={{shop.domain}}&code={{gift_card.code}}
    4. Find every {{ shop.url }} and replace it with the same address.
    5. Find the button text "Visit online store" and change it to "Activate gift card".
    6. Select Save.
    7. Repeat for Gift card receipt.
    8. Test it: create a small gift card in the Shopify admin for your own email address, open the email and select Activate gift card.

When the recipient selects Activate gift card, a page opens showing their gift card in your Wrapped gift card email design, and the card is imported into Wrapped and synced to your other sales channels. Wrapped doesn't send a separate email when a card is imported this way.

If the link opens a page saying "Account not found", replace {{shop.domain}} with your store's myshopify address typed in full, for example shopifyDomain=examplestore.myshopify.com.

Option 3: look the card up at the register

Some connected sales channels can bring a Shopify gift card in when staff look it up:

What Wrapped imports

From the Shopify cardIn Wrapped
Current balanceThe card's balance (converted to your Wrapped currency if your Shopify store uses a different one)
Initial valueInitial value
Expiry dateExpiry date
Customer, if the card is linked to oneRecipient name and email
NoteAdded to the card's notes
Active cardImported as Active
Deactivated cardImported as Disabled with a $0 balance
Expired cardImported as Disabled

The card's reason is Import, and its timeline shows "Existing … gift card imported from Shopify". Any spending before the import is already reflected in the balance, but those earlier redemptions don't appear as separate entries in Wrapped.

If Wrapped already has a gift card with the same code and no value (for example a blank physical card you imported), Wrapped adds the Shopify balance to that card instead of creating a new one.

Common questions

Can Wrapped import all my Shopify gift cards at once?

No. Shopify doesn't give apps the full codes of existing gift cards, only the last 4 characters. Each card is imported when someone uses its full code with Wrapped.

I have a list of the full codes. Can I import them from a file?

If the full codes and balances came from somewhere else (for example the app that created them), you can import them with Import existing gift cards from a CSV file. Wrapped links each code to the existing Shopify gift card and sets its Shopify balance to the balance in your file, so make sure the balances are up to date.

Will importing change the balance in Shopify?

No. Wrapped takes the balance from Shopify, then pushes that same balance to your other sales channels.

A customer's old Shopify gift card is rejected in store. What do I do?

Enter the code on your check balance page (or use your register's import option). Once it's imported and synced, try again at the register.

Can I import Shopify store credit?

No. Shopify store credit isn't a gift card with a code, so it can't be imported this way.
