You connect Shopify from Settings › Sales channels in Wrapped. It takes a few minutes: you approve the Wrapped app in Shopify, Wrapped creates a Digital Gift Card product in your store, and once the sales channel is switched on, gift cards bought and redeemed in Shopify stay in step with Wrapped and every other sales channel you've connected. Wrapped uses Shopify's own gift cards, so customers redeem them at checkout and in Shopify POS the same way as any Shopify gift card.
Before you start
- You need to be an Owner or Admin in Wrapped. Other roles can't add sales channels (see Team members and roles).
- You need a Shopify login that can install apps on the store you're connecting.
- Know your store name. It's the part of your Shopify admin address after
admin.shopify.com/store/. Use that, not your custom website domain. - Connect the store you'll sell from. Shopify development stores can't accept gift cards at checkout. If you want to try things out first, read Testing gift cards with a Shopify development store.
Connect your store
- In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels (open).
- Select Add sales channel and choose Shopify.
- In Shopify store, enter your store name (for example
examplestore) and select Connect. - Shopify opens and shows the permissions the Wrapped app needs. Approve the install.
- You're returned to Sales channels with the message "Shopify connected." Your store now appears under Connected sales channels. (If you haven't finished your Wrapped profile yet, you're taken there first.)
Approve the install in the same browser, still signed in to the same Wrapped account, within 30 minutes. If you switch Wrapped accounts or sign out part-way, you come back with "We couldn't finish connecting that sales channel." Start again from Add sales channel.
Switch the sales channel on
A new Shopify sales channel starts Disabled. Wrapped only processes Shopify orders when both of these are true:
- the Shopify sales channel shows Enabled, and
- your gift card program is live.
How you turn it on depends on where you are:
- Not launched yet: on Home, the Finish setting up Wrapped card ends with Go live. Selecting it turns your gift card program on and switches on any disabled sales channels, including Shopify.
- Already live: on Settings › Sales channels, turn on the switch next to your Shopify store. Its status changes from Disabled to Enabled.
Orders placed while the sales channel is disabled, or before you go live, are ignored when they arrive. If you need one processed later, use Check orders on the sales channel (see Shopify troubleshooting). Orders placed before you connected Shopify are never processed.
Set up the gift card product
When you connect, Wrapped creates a product in your Shopify store:
| Detail | What Wrapped creates |
|---|---|
| Title and product type | Digital Gift Card |
| Vendor | Wrapped Gift Cards |
| Variants | $10, $25, $50 and $100 (option name "Denomination") |
| Tax | Variants set as not taxable |
| Inventory | Not tracked |
| Status | Draft for a new connection |
It's a normal Shopify product, not one of Shopify's own gift card products. That's deliberate: Shopify doesn't let apps read the full code of gift cards its own gift card products create, so Wrapped creates the gift card itself when the order is paid. See How Wrapped works with Shopify gift cards.
- On Settings › Sales channels, select Edit gift card product next to your Shopify store. The product opens in your Shopify admin.
- Change the title, images, description and variants to suit your brand. Each variant's price is the value of the gift card a customer receives. The variant names use "$", so rename them if your store sells in another currency.
- Check the product's shipping setting. Gift cards from this product are emailed, so you'll usually want it set so customers aren't asked for shipping.
- Set the product status to Active and make sure it's available on your Online Store sales channel (and Point of Sale, if you sell gift cards in store).
- Set any other gift card products to Draft, including Shopify's own gift card products, so customers can't buy a card Wrapped doesn't know about.
Check the product's status in Shopify whenever you switch the sales channel on or off in Wrapped, and set it yourself.
Setup on the sales channel opens the Shopify setup guide, a checklist of these steps plus the optional gifting widgets. Tick each one off as you go. To let customers send a gift card to someone else, see Add a "Send to a friend" option to your Shopify gift card product.
Shopify settings in Wrapped
Select Settings next to your Shopify store to open Shopify settings.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Fulfill gift cards automatically | After Wrapped creates the gift cards for an order, it marks those gift card items as fulfilled in Shopify. Shopify doesn't send the customer a shipping notification for them. Other items on the order aren't touched. |
| Issue gift cards in the customer's purchase currency (marked Unstable) | Creates the Shopify gift card in the currency the customer paid in, instead of your store currency. The dashboard notes it needs Shopify Plus and the currency turned on in your Markets. It relies on a Shopify API that isn't stable yet, so only use it after talking to the Wrapped team. See Currencies and gift cards. |
| Shopify gift card product ID | The product Wrapped treats as a gift card purchase. It's filled in for you. Change it only if you sell gift cards from a different product; the ID is the number at the end of the product's address in your Shopify admin. |
| Test connection | Checks that Wrapped can still reach your store. |
Check that it works
- In Wrapped, go to Gift cards › All gift cards and select Issue gift card.
- Enter a small value, enter your own email address as the recipient (or leave it empty), and select Issue gift card.
- Within a few minutes, open your Shopify admin and go to Products › Gift cards. The new card is listed. Shopify only shows the last 4 characters of the code.
- Delete the test card in Wrapped when you're done (Delete gift card). See Removing test gift cards before you launch.
To test a customer buying a gift card, see Testing gift cards with a Shopify development store.
What connecting does and doesn't do
- Wrapped subscribes to your Shopify orders, so it hears about gift card purchases, redemptions, refunds and cancellations, and when the app is uninstalled.
- Gift cards you issue anywhere in Wrapped are created in Shopify with the same code, once the channel is enabled.
- Existing Shopify gift cards are not imported. Shopify only shares the last 4 characters of existing codes, so there's no bulk import. See Bring existing Shopify gift cards into Wrapped.
- Gift cards already in Wrapped aren't copied to Shopify in one go when you connect. A card is created in Shopify the next time Wrapped syncs it, for example after a balance change or when you use Re-sync balance to sales channels on the card.
Common questions
Does connecting Shopify cost extra?
No. All plans include unlimited sales channels. See Plans and pricing.
Can I connect more than one Shopify store?
Yes. Repeat the steps for each store. Each store is its own sales channel with its own Digital Gift Card product, and a gift card issued in Wrapped is created in every connected store.
I use a custom domain. What do I enter?
Your Shopify store name from the admin address (admin.shopify.com/store/examplestore means you enter examplestore), not your website domain.
Where do gift card sales show in Shopify's reports?
As product sales, because the Digital Gift Card is a normal product. Shopify doesn't record them as gift card liability. Use Wrapped's reports for outstanding balances; see The Liability report.
How do I reconnect or reinstall the app?
Repeat the connection steps with the same store, signed in to the Wrapped account it belongs to. Wrapped switches that account's existing sales channel back on and reinstalls its order notifications instead of creating a new one. If the same store is also connected to another Wrapped account where it's turned off or disconnected, it stays that way there. See Shopify troubleshooting.
We tested on a development store. How do we go live?
Keep the same Wrapped account. Disconnect the development store, connect your live store, and delete your test gift cards. See Go-live checklist.
