Customers buy a Wrapped gift card from the Digital Gift Card product Wrapped adds to your store when you connect Shopify. When the order is paid, Wrapped creates a gift card for each one bought, creates it in Shopify and your other sales channels with the same code, and emails it. Customers redeem it by entering the code at your Shopify checkout, in Shopify POS, or in any other channel you've connected.
If you haven't connected yet, start with Connect Shopify.
Get the product ready
- In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels and select Edit gift card product next to your Shopify store.
- In Shopify, add your own images and description.
- Set up the variants. Each variant's price is the gift card's value. Wrapped creates $10, $25, $50 and $100 to start with; add, remove or rename them as you like.
- Check the shipping setting so customers aren't asked for a shipping address for an emailed gift card.
- Set the product to Active and make it available on your Online Store.
- Set any other gift card products to Draft, including Shopify's own gift card products.
The product is a normal Shopify product, not one of Shopify's gift card products. That's what lets Wrapped create and control the code. It also means Shopify reports these sales as product sales rather than gift card liability (see How Wrapped works with Shopify gift cards).
What happens when a customer buys a gift card
- The customer adds the product to their cart and checks out.
- When Shopify marks the order Paid, Wrapped processes it, usually within a few minutes.
- For each gift card on the order, Wrapped:
- generates a code using your code format (Gift card code format and each platform's rules),
- sets the value to the variant's price,
- adds an expiry date if your gift cards expire (Gift card expiry),
- creates the card in Shopify and your other connected sales channels,
- emails the gift card to the email address on the order, using your gift card email (Customize your gift card emails).
- The card appears in Gift cards › All gift cards, linked to the Shopify order number.
A quantity of 3 creates three separate gift cards, each with its own code.
If the customer used a gifting option on the product page, the recipient gets the gift card instead, either straight away or on the date the customer chose. See Add a "Send to a friend" option to your Shopify gift card product.
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Discount code applied to the order | The gift card is still worth the variant's full price. Wrapped uses the product price before discounts. Exclude the product from discounts in Shopify if you don't want this. |
| Payment still pending (bank deposit, cash on delivery) | Nothing yet. The gift card is created once the order is paid. |
| Order has no email address | The gift card is created but Wrapped has nowhere to email it. Add the customer's email to the gift card in Wrapped and resend it (Edit recipient details and resend a gift card email). |
| Order is fully refunded | The gift card is voided. See Refund to a gift card in Shopify. |
| Order placed while the sales channel was disabled | Not processed automatically. See Shopify troubleshooting. |
Fulfilling gift card orders
Shopify treats gift card items on these orders as unfulfilled until you fulfil them. To have Wrapped do it, open Settings › Sales channels, select Settings next to your Shopify store and turn on Fulfill gift cards automatically. Wrapped then marks the gift card items fulfilled after it creates the gift cards, without Shopify sending a shipping notification. Other items on the same order are left for you.
Selling from more than one product
Shopify gift card product ID in Shopify settings holds one product. Wrapped also treats any product variant whose SKU contains wrapped_giftcard as a gift card purchase. To sell a second gift card product (for example a seasonal design), give each of its variants the SKU wrapped_giftcard.
Don't use that SKU on physical gift card products. Wrapped would create and email a separate digital gift card for each one sold. See Sell physical gift cards through Shopify.
How customers redeem their gift card
- Online: at your Shopify checkout, the customer enters the code in the discount code or gift card field. If the card doesn't cover the whole order, they pay the rest with another payment method. See Gift cards at Shopify checkout: split payments and limits.
- In store with Shopify POS: staff take the gift card as a payment. See Selling and redeeming gift cards in Shopify POS.
- In your other sales channels: the same code works anywhere you've connected, because Wrapped keeps the balance in step.

Common questions
Does every gift card sold on Shopify count toward my plan?
Gift cards bought on Shopify count toward your monthly gift card allowance like any other gift card. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
Can customers choose their own amount?
Not with the Digital Gift Card product on its own. A Shopify product has fixed prices, so offer the amounts you want as variants.
Can I run a promotion, like "buy a $100 gift card, get a $20 bonus"?
Yes, with marketing automations, which can trigger on Shopify orders. See Holiday promotion recipes: buy a gift card, get a bonus.
Does Shopify send its own gift card email too?
No. Wrapped creates the Shopify gift card itself, so the only gift card email the customer gets is Wrapped's.
Can I sell gift cards on Shopify POS with this product?
Yes. See Selling and redeeming gift cards in Shopify POS.
