Updated September 19, 2026

These recipes give the exact choices to make in the automation editor for the most common gift card promotions. Each one starts the same way: go to Marketing › Automations, select Create automation, and give it a Name. When you've set everything, select Save, then Activate under Status.

Automations need the Pro or Plus plan. For what every option means, see Marketing automations.

  • Bonus gift cards need the customer's email address. For in-store sales, staff must attach a customer with an email address to the sale.
  • Bonus gift cards count toward your monthly gift card allowance. Bonus credit doesn't. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
  • Turn on the email for bonus gift cards. Email the customer their gift card is off when you create an automation.
  • Starts and Ends use your computer's time zone.

Recipe 1: Nov 20 – Dec 24, buy a $100+ gift card and get a $20 bonus gift card

SectionChoose
NameHoliday bonus card 2026
TriggerGift card purchased
MinimumTurn on Require a minimum gift card purchase amount. Minimum amount: 100
Sales channels (optional)Leave all unticked to include every channel, including the web store
RewardBonus gift card
Type of gift cardGift card of a fixed value. Amount: 20
ExpiryOn a set date, Expires on: 31 March 2027 (or A number of days after the order: 90)
LimitsStarts: 20 Nov 2026, 12
AM. Ends: 24 Dec 2026, 11
PM
EmailTurn on Email the customer their gift card, then Edit email to write something like "Here's your $20 bonus gift card"

How it behaves:

  • Each qualifying card gets its own bonus. A customer who buys two $100 cards gets two $20 bonus cards. Two $50 cards don't qualify, because each card is checked on its own value.
  • The bonus card goes to the buyer's email address, even if the $100 card is a gift.
  • Orders placed after 11
PM on 24 December don't get a bonus, and the automation shows Expired.

Set Expires on after your Ends date. If the bonus card expiry date passes while the promotion is still running, the automation stops issuing.

Recipe 2: $100 gift card becomes $120 value (bonus credit)

SectionChoose

MinimumRequire a minimum gift card purchase amount: 100
Maximum (optional)Require a maximum gift card purchase amount: 100, if only $100 cards should qualify
RewardBonus credit
Type of creditCredit of a fixed value. Amount: 20
ExpiryNo expiry date (bonus credit can't expire separately)
LimitsStarts and Ends for your promotion dates

The customer's $100 card shows a $120 balance once Wrapped processes the sale. No email is sent and no customer is needed, so this suits in-store sales and physical cards. If a gift card is a present, the recipient gets the extra value.

Variation, 20% on every card: choose Credit value as a percentage of the purchased gift card value with Percentage 20. A $50 card gets $10 and a $250 card gets $50.

Maximum uses doesn't limit bonus credit automations. Use Ends to control how long the promotion runs.

Recipe 3: Spend $500, get a $50 gift card

SectionChoose
TriggerOrder paid
MinimumTurn on Require a minimum order spend. Minimum amount: 500
Sales channels (optional)Tick the channels to include, or leave all unticked for every channel
Type of gift cardGift card of a fixed value. Amount: 50
ExpiryA number of days after the order: 60
EmailTurn on Email the customer their gift card

How it behaves:

  • One $50 card per qualifying order, whether the order is $500 or $2,000.
  • The $500 is compared with the order total your sales channel reports, normally after discounts and including tax (and shipping online). An order of exactly $500 qualifies.
  • Order paid doesn't use Wrapped web store orders.

Recipe 4: Every $100 spent earns $10

Option A, one gift card per $100:

SectionChoose
TriggerOrder paid
Type of gift cardGift card of a fixed value for every $x spent in one order. Amount: 10. For every: 100

A $350 order earns three separate $10 gift cards. Each card counts toward your gift card allowance, and orders under $100 earn nothing.

Option B, one gift card worth 10%:

SectionChoose
TriggerOrder paid
Type of gift cardGift card value as a percentage of the order total. Percentage: 10

A $350 order earns one $35 gift card. Add Require a minimum order spend of 100 if smaller orders shouldn't earn.

Recipe 5: Gift cards for selected products

Buy selected products on a POS or online store:

SectionChoose

When selected products are purchasedAdd product IDs, choose the sales channel, paste each product ID and press Enter. Add a row for each sales channel
Minimum (optional)Require a minimum order spend: compared with the item price of the matching products times their quantity, not the whole order

Product IDs are specific to each sales channel. A channel without a row won't trigger the automation.

Buy selected gift card products on your web store:

Golf club examples

These suit golf courses using Lightspeed Retail for the pro shop and Lightspeed Restaurant for the clubhouse. Staff must attach the member or customer, with an email address, to the sale for bonus gift cards. See Onboarding guide for Lightspeed Golf courses.

Automations can't be limited to days of the week (for example "Monday to Thursday only"). For a weekday promotion, set Starts and Ends for each period or disable the automation on the other days.

After you activate

  • Tell customers. Put the offer on signage, your website, social media and emails. Automations run in the background, so customers only know about the offer if you tell them.
  • Check the first few. After the first qualifying sale, find the bonus gift card under Gift cards › All gift cards, or check the purchased card's balance for bonus credit.
  • Watch the numbers. The automations list shows Credit issued and Revenue. Select Reporting for detail (reports refresh about every 2 hours).

Common questions

Can one customer get the bonus more than once?

Yes. Each qualifying order or card gets a bonus. There's no per-customer limit; Maximum uses is a total across everyone.

Can I run two automations at the same time?

Yes. If an order qualifies for two active automations, it can get both rewards.

Can I make the bonus usable only after the holidays?

No. A bonus gift card can be used as soon as it's issued. You can make it expire, but not start later.

Does the bonus apply to gift cards bought before I activated?

No. Only orders processed while the automation is active count.
