Marketing automations

How automations issue a bonus gift card or bonus credit on their own when a customer pays for an order, buys a gift card, or your systems send an event - with every trigger, reward, expiry, limit and email option, which sales channels they work on, plan requirements, and what happens after a downgrade.

Updated September 19, 2026

An automation gives customers a bonus on its own whenever every condition you set is met. It can trigger when a customer pays for an order, when a customer buys a gift card, or when your own systems send an event. The reward is either a bonus gift card (a new promotional gift card emailed to the customer) or bonus credit (extra value added to the gift card they just bought). Automations work on orders from your connected sales channels, such as Shopify and Lightspeed, not only on the Wrapped web store.

Automations are included on the Pro and Plus plans. Enterprise accounts have them when marketing features are switched on for the account. On Basic, Marketing › Automations shows an upgrade page. See Which features are included on each plan.

Create an automation

    1. Go to Marketing › Automations and select Create automation. A draft opens.
    2. Under Name, give it a name your team will recognise. Customers don't see it.
    3. Under Trigger, choose Order paid, Gift card purchased or API event.
    4. Set the trigger conditions (minimum and maximum amount, sales channels, products). See "Trigger conditions" below.
    5. Under Reward, choose what the customer gets and how much. See "Rewards" below.
    6. Under Expiry, choose when a bonus gift card expires.
    7. Under Limits, optionally set Starts, Ends and a maximum number of uses.
    8. Under Email, turn on Email the customer their gift card and select Edit email to design the email. This is off for new automations, so turn it on if you're issuing bonus gift cards.
    9. Select Save.
    10. Under Status, select Activate, then confirm. Your changes are saved first.

The automation now issues on new qualifying orders and events. It doesn't go back over orders that were already processed before it was active.

Triggers

TriggerFires whenWorks on
Order paidA customer pays for an orderOrders from your connected sales channels, in store and online (for example Shopify and Lightspeed). Not Wrapped web store orders.
Gift card purchasedA customer buys a gift cardGift cards sold through your connected sales channels and the Wrapped web store
API eventYour backend, Zapier or a Klaviyo flow sends an event with the Event name you enterEvents sent to Wrapped. See The Wrapped API.

An order must be paid (for example a completed sale at the register, or a paid online order). Orders that are open, unpaid or voided don't trigger automations.

Trigger conditions

For Order paid and Gift card purchased:

ConditionOrder paidGift card purchased
MinimumRequire a minimum order spendRequire a minimum gift card purchase amount
MaximumRequire a maximum order spendRequire a maximum gift card purchase amount
What the amount is compared withThe order total your sales channel reports, normally after discounts and including tax (and shipping for online orders). With product IDs set, the item price of the matching products times their quantity instead, which may not reflect order-level discounts. The value of each gift card bought, one card at a time
Sales channels (optional)Leave all unticked for every channel, or tick the channels to includeSame
ProductsWhen selected products are purchased: add a row per sales channel and paste that channel's product IDsWhen selected web store products are purchased: shown when a web store channel is ticked under Sales channels; pick web store products

Things to know:

  • Minimums are "at least". An order of exactly $500 meets a $500 minimum.
  • Gift card purchased looks at each card. With a $100 minimum, a $150 card qualifies, but two $50 cards bought together don't. Each qualifying card in an order gets its own reward.
  • Reloading an existing gift card doesn't count as buying a gift card.
  • Product IDs are per sales channel. If you add product IDs for Shopify only, orders from Lightspeed won't trigger the automation.
  • Gift card purchased with web store products picked only triggers on those web store products. Gift cards bought on other channels don't qualify.

Rewards

For Gift card purchased, choose the reward type:

  • Bonus gift card: "Sent separately to the purchaser." A new promotional gift card is created and emailed to the customer who bought.
  • Bonus credit: "Added to the gift card they bought." The purchased card's balance goes up. No second card, no email, no customer email address needed.

Order paid and API event automations always issue a bonus gift card. See Bonus gift card or bonus credit? to choose.

Then choose how much:

OptionOrder paidGift card purchased
Fixed valueGift card of a fixed valueGift card of a fixed value or Credit of a fixed value
Every $x… for every $x spent in one order: one bonus gift card for every full amount spent (spend $250 with "$10 for every $100" and get two $10 cards)… for every $x in gift card value purchased: a $10 bonus for every full $100 on each card
PercentageGift card value as a percentage of the order total… as a percentage of the purchased gift card value

API event automations support a fixed value only.

Expiry

The Expiry setting decides when a bonus gift card expires:

  • No expiry date
  • On a set date (enter Expires on)
  • A number of days after the order (enter Number of days)

Bonus credit added to a purchased card can't be given its own expiry. It follows the card it's added to. Leave Expiry as No expiry date for bonus credit automations.

If you choose On a set date and that date passes, the automation stops issuing and is marked Expired. Pick an expiry date after your promotion's Ends date. If you choose A number of days after the order, enter at least 1 day: with 0 days the automation expires on the first qualifying order.

For how expired promotional cards behave at the register, see Gift card expiry.

Limits

  • Starts (optional): leave blank to start as soon as you activate.
  • Ends (optional): leave blank for no end date. Orders placed after this time don't trigger, and the automation is marked Expired.
  • Limit how many times it can trigger and Maximum uses: a total across every order and gift card, not per customer. When it's reached, the automation stops issuing.

Starts and Ends are entered in your computer's time zone.

Maximum uses counts bonus gift card automations. It doesn't limit bonus credit automations, so use an Ends date to control how long a bonus credit promotion runs.

Emails

With Email the customer their gift card on, each bonus gift card is emailed to the customer's email address from the order. New automations start with a copy of your gift card email. Select Edit email to change the subject and content; use merge tags such as the balance, code and expiry date. See Email merge tags.

Bonus credit doesn't send an email.

In-store (POS) orders

For a bonus gift card on an in-store sale, attach a customer with an email address to the sale in your POS. Without an email address, Wrapped has nowhere to send the bonus card and the automation doesn't issue one. Bonus credit doesn't need a customer.

Bonus gift cards are created in all your connected sales channels like any other Wrapped gift card, so the customer can use the code in store or online.

Status and managing automations

StatusMeaning
DraftNot issuing yet.
ActiveIssuing on qualifying orders and events.
DisabledStopped. Enable it to start again.
ExpiredIts end date or bonus gift card expiry date has passed.

From Marketing › Automations, use the menu on a row to Edit, view Reporting, Disable or Activate, or Delete. Disabling or deleting an automation doesn't affect gift cards or credit it has already issued. Filter the list by status, or search by name. The list shows each automation's Credit issued and Revenue.

Plans, billing and reporting

  • Bonus gift cards count toward your monthly gift card allowance. Bonus credit added to a card doesn't, because no new card is created. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
  • Bonus gift cards are marked promotional, and each bonus gift card and bonus credit shows up as its own entry in the Adjustments report. See Promotional gift cards and bonus credit in reports.
  • Reporting on an automation (Owners and Admins) shows revenue, orders and credit from what it issued. Reports refresh about every 2 hours.

If you downgrade

If your account moves to a plan without marketing features (or is cancelled), your active automations are disabled. Bonus gift cards and bonus credit already issued keep working. After upgrading again, automations don't switch themselves back on: open each one and select Enable. See Upgrading or downgrading your plan.

Common questions

Do automations work on Lightspeed and Shopify sales, or only the web store?

Both. Order paid automations trigger on orders from your connected sales channels, in store and online. Gift card purchased automations trigger on gift cards sold through your connected sales channels and the web store. Only Order paid doesn't use web store orders.

Does the customer need an email address?

For a bonus gift card, yes: the order needs a customer with an email address. For bonus credit, no.

Can I limit an automation to certain dates or amounts?

Yes. Use Starts and Ends for dates, a minimum and maximum amount, and Maximum uses to cap the total number of times a bonus gift card automation triggers. There's no quantity condition (such as "buy 3 items"); use a minimum spend instead.

Can I limit it to one bonus per customer?

No. Maximum uses is a total across all customers, not per customer.

Is the spend threshold before or after discounts?

After. Wrapped uses the order total your sales channel reports, which is normally after discounts and includes tax (and shipping online). With product IDs set, it uses the item price of the matching products times their quantity, which may not reflect order-level discounts.

How does an in-store customer get their bonus gift card?

By email, to the address on the customer attached to the sale. The card also exists in your POS, so staff can look it up by code.

Can bonus credit expire?

Not separately. Bonus gift cards can have their own expiry; bonus credit follows the card it was added to.
