Currencies and gift cards

How your Wrapped account currency works, what happens to existing cards if you change it, how Shopify gift cards are converted to your store's base currency, issuing Shopify gift cards in a customer's currency with Markets, and running more than one currency.

Each Wrapped account has one currency, set in Settings › Business details. New gift cards are created in that currency, and each card keeps the currency it was created in. Wrapped converts between currencies only for Shopify: if a card's currency is different from your Shopify store's base currency, Wrapped converts the amount at the current exchange rate when it creates or updates the card in Shopify. Your other sales channels should use the same currency as your Wrapped account. To run gift cards in several currencies, use a separate Wrapped account for each.

Your account currency

    1. Go to Settings › Business details.
    2. Next to Time zone and currency, click Edit.
    3. Choose the Currency and save.

The currency is used for new gift cards and for amounts shown in the dashboard. It's usually set when you create your account.

Each card keeps the currency it was created in, and its balance isn't converted. Change your currency before you issue or import cards, not after. If you need to change it on an account that already has cards, contact support first.

Shopify

Your store's base currency

Shopify gift cards are created in your Shopify store's base currency. If a Wrapped card's currency is different (for example a card bought at a Lightspeed register in another currency), Wrapped converts the amount to your Shopify base currency at the current exchange rate when it creates or updates the card in Shopify. Exchange rates are refreshed daily, so the Shopify balance of such a card can differ slightly from a straight conversion as rates move.

When a customer pays in another currency at a Shopify checkout (with Shopify Markets), Shopify converts between the checkout currency and the card's currency, so the value the customer sees can vary with exchange rates.

Issuing Shopify gift cards in the customer's currency

By default, a gift card bought on a Shopify store with Markets is issued in your store's base currency. If you have Shopify Plus and the currency turned on in your Markets, you can instead issue cards in the currency the customer paid in:

    1. Go to Settings › Sales channels.
    2. Next to your Shopify store, click Settings.
    3. Tick Issue gift cards in the customer's purchase currency and save.

This option is marked Unstable. It uses a Shopify API that hasn't reached a stable release and may change without notice, so it's recommended for testing only. Talk to support before turning it on for a live store.

With it on, a card bought in, say, euros is created in Shopify in euros, and the customer's emails, wallet pass and check balance page show the euro balance.

Other sales channels

Wrapped doesn't convert currencies for Lightspeed, Square, BigCommerce, WooCommerce or other channels. A card's balance is sent as the same number. Make sure these channels use the same currency as your Wrapped account.

More than one currency

If you sell in several currencies, for example stores in Australia and New Zealand, use a separate Wrapped account for each currency, each connected to the sales channels that use that currency. Shopify merchants can also run separate Shopify stores with different base currencies so gift cards are issued and redeemed without conversion. See Running several venues, brands or gift card programs.

Common questions

Can a gift card bought in one currency be used in another?

Only through Shopify's own conversion at a Shopify checkout. Other channels don't convert, so keep each Wrapped account to one currency.

Can I issue a gift card from the dashboard in a different currency?

No. Cards you issue from the dashboard use your account currency.

I have cards in more than one currency in one account

This can happen if the account currency was changed after cards were created, or cards came from a channel in another currency. Contact support before relying on totals that mix currencies.

My Shopify balance is a few cents different from Wrapped

That card's currency is different from your Shopify base currency, and the exchange rate changed between syncs. Check the card's currency on its page (shown next to Balance).
