Customers pay with a Wrapped gift card through the Wrapped Gift Cards button on the Lightspeed Retail R-Series sale screen. It works the same for a physical card, the gift card email (on screen or printed), and a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. You choose how much to take from the card, so a card can pay for all or part of a sale.
Take payment with a gift card
- Add the items to the sale, then select Wrapped Gift Cards.
- Select Find or activate gift card.
- Scan the code with your barcode scanner or the scan button next to the code box, or type it. Then select Find or activate gift card.
- Check the balance. Amount to redeem is filled in with the amount due, or the card's whole balance if that's less.
- Select Pay (the button shows the amount).
- You're taken back to the sale, which shows the gift card payment. Take any remaining amount with another payment method and finish the sale as normal.
Pay part of the sale with the card
To split the sale, lower Amount to redeem before you select Pay, then take the rest with another payment method. You can also use a second gift card by opening Wrapped Gift Cards again.
If the card doesn't cover the sale, the screen says "This card won't cover the full amount due." Pay what the card has, then take the rest another way. See Paying with a gift card and another payment method.
The customer doesn't have their code
If your store has turned on customer lookup:
- Customer already on the sale: their gift cards are listed on the first screen. Select one.
- Otherwise: type the customer's email address in the Gift card number or email address box and select Find or activate gift card. Pick the card from the list if they have more than one.
Messages you might see
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Amount is more than the gift card balance | Lower Amount to redeem to the balance or less |
| Amount is more than the amount due | Lower Amount to redeem to the amount still owed |
| Already applied to order | This card is already a payment on this sale. Use a different card or payment method |
| Voided badge, with no pay button | The card has been voided and can't be used. Ask a manager |
| Add new gift card to sale | Wrapped doesn't recognise the code. Check it for typos. Don't add funds unless you're selling a new card |
What happens after the sale
- The balance comes off the card in Wrapped when the sale is finished and Wrapped picks it up, usually within a few minutes. If you remove the gift card payment or the sale isn't finished, nothing is taken.
- The new balance then syncs to your other channels, such as your online store.
- If the card has an email address, the customer gets an email with their updated balance, and a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet shows the new balance.
Common questions
The customer used the card online a few minutes ago. Could the balance be out of date?
Yes, briefly. A sale takes a few minutes to reach Wrapped, so a card used in two places at almost the same time can end up below zero. See What happens if a card is used in two places at the same time.
Can the customer pay with a web store voucher?
Yes. Find the voucher's code with the same button. Vouchers are redeemed in full with their own button rather than as a payment. See Redeeming vouchers.
The code isn't found.
See A gift card code isn't accepted at the register or checkout.
