With the web extension, staff sell and redeem Wrapped gift cards from a Wrapped Gift Cards button on the Lightspeed Retail R-Series sale screen. Setup takes about 15 minutes: connect your Lightspeed account, add the button in Lightspeed, check the IDs and settings Wrapped filled in, optionally record web store sales in Lightspeed, then turn the sales channel on and test. Not sure this is the right method? See Connect Lightspeed Retail R-Series: native or web extension?
Before you start
- You need to be an Owner or Admin in Wrapped (see Team members and roles).
- You need admin access in Lightspeed R-Series to approve apps, add custom menus and view payment types.
- If you already sell Lightspeed gift cards, plan how to bring them into Wrapped first. See the common questions at the end of this article.
1. Connect your Lightspeed account
- In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels (open) and select Add sales channel.
- Choose Lightspeed Retail (R-Series).
- Sign in to Lightspeed and approve access for Wrapped.
- You're returned to Sales channels with the message "Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) connected." The new channel is Disabled and shows a setup steps badge.
When you connect, Wrapped creates two things in your Lightspeed account:
- An item called Wrapped Gift Card. It's a non-inventory, non-taxable item that staff add to a sale when they sell or top up a gift card.
- A payment type called Wrapped Gift Cards, which records gift card payments on the sale.
2. Add the Wrapped Gift Cards button
Select Setup on the sales channel to open the R-Series setup guide. Its first step shows your Custom menu button URL, which looks like https://manage.wrappedgiftcards.com/pos/rseries/ followed by your sales channel ID.
- Copy the Custom menu button URL.
- In Lightspeed, go to Settings › Custom menus › Register: Sale Tab.
- Create a button titled Wrapped Gift Cards with the type Open web page. Don't set it to open in a new tab.
- Select the pencil icon next to the new button, paste the URL and save.
- Back in the Wrapped setup guide, mark the step as done.
3. Check the IDs and settings
- In the setup guide's second step, check Gift card product ID and Wrapped gift card payment type ID. Wrapped fills these in with the item and payment type it created. You can compare them with the ID in the address bar when you open that item or payment type in Lightspeed. Select Save if you change anything, then mark the step as done.
- Go back to Sales channels and select Settings on the R-Series channel.
- Under How staff use gift cards, make sure Custom button / web extension (recommended) is selected.
- Choose a Lightspeed location for gift card adjustments and a Lightspeed employee for gift card adjustments. Lightspeed needs every sale Wrapped creates to belong to a location and an employee, for example the sales Wrapped creates for web store orders. Both are required.
- Set Number of Lightspeed registers in this shop to your real number of registers. Lightspeed allows more API requests as the register count goes up. Setting it higher than your real count can make Lightspeed reject requests when you're busy.
- Choose any options (below), then select Save.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Let staff look up gift cards by customer email | Staff can type a customer's email instead of a code, and a customer attached to the sale has their gift cards listed automatically |
| Sync recent orders when the web extension opens | Re-checks the last 5 minutes of sales each time the button is opened, to catch anything missed. Leave it off unless you need gift cards to appear in Wrapped faster than usual |
| Create an order in Lightspeed when a gift card is bought on your Wrapped online store | See step 4 below |
| Turn on prize accounts | For clubs running prize accounts. See Prize accounts |
4. Optional: record web store gift card sales in Lightspeed
If you sell gift cards on your Wrapped web store, Wrapped can create a matching completed sale in R-Series for each order, so your Lightspeed reports include them.
- In the R-Series settings, turn on Create an order in Lightspeed when a gift card is bought on your Wrapped online store and select Save. Wrapped creates an item called Wrapped eGift Card for these sales.
- In Lightspeed, go to Settings › Payment Types and create a payment type named WRAPPED_ECOM_GIFTCARD.
- Copy the new payment type's ID from the address bar in Lightspeed.
- Paste it into Online store payment type ID (in the setup guide or the R-Series settings) and save.
Each web store gift card order then appears in R-Series as a completed sale at your chosen location, paid with WRAPPED_ECOM_GIFTCARD.
5. Turn the channel on and test
- On Sales channels, turn on the switch next to the R-Series channel.
- In Wrapped, go to Gift cards › All gift cards, select Issue gift card, enter a small value and select Issue gift card. Copy the code.
- In Lightspeed, start a new sale and select Wrapped Gift Cards.
- Select Find or activate gift card, paste the code and select Find or activate gift card again.
- You should see "Gift card" with the code and the balance you issued. Select Back without paying.
- In Wrapped, open the test card and delete it (Delete gift card) so it doesn't appear in reporting.
To test the full loop, sell a low-value card with the button (see Staff guide: selling a gift card in R-Series (web extension)), complete the sale, check it appears in Wrapped within a few minutes, then delete it.
How sales reach Wrapped
Wrapped checks your Lightspeed account for newly completed sales every couple of minutes. A gift card sold or redeemed with the button usually shows in Wrapped within a few minutes of the sale being completed, and then syncs to your other channels. Only sales completed after you connected are processed. See Staff guide: redeeming a gift card in R-Series (web extension) for what that means at the register.
Common questions
Do I connect each shop separately?
No. One connection covers your whole Lightspeed R-Series account, including every shop and register in it. If you have several separate Lightspeed accounts, connect each one as its own sales channel.
Staff can't see the Wrapped Gift Cards button.
Check the button was added under Register: Sale Tab in Settings › Custom menus, and that the register has been refreshed. The button only appears on the sale screen.
The button opens but says the gift card isn't found, or offers to activate an old Lightspeed gift card as new.
That card isn't in Wrapped yet. Don't activate it as a new card. Import your existing Lightspeed gift cards first: the Wrapped team can import your active Lightspeed gift cards (see Getting help), or use Import existing gift cards from a CSV file.
Does anything change in Lightspeed when a balance changes online?
No. With the web extension the balance lives in Wrapped, and the button always shows the current balance. That's why this method isn't slowed down by Lightspeed's API limits.
Can I use Lightspeed's own Gift Card button as well?
Don't mix them. Lightspeed's own gift cards aren't connected to Wrapped when you use the web extension, so they won't sync with your other channels.
