Connect R-Series using native gift cards

Step-by-step setup for Lightspeed Retail R-Series with Lightspeed's built-in gift cards - prerequisites, connecting, choosing the native option, what Wrapped creates in Lightspeed, how balance changes are written back, API limits, and how to test.

Updated September 19, 2026

With native gift cards, staff keep using Lightspeed Retail R-Series' own gift card screens, and Wrapped keeps every card's balance in step between Lightspeed and your other channels. It suits single-location stores with low gift card volume, because Lightspeed allows only a few gift card updates each minute. If you sell many gift cards, run promotions or connect several Lightspeed accounts, use the web extension instead. See Connect Lightspeed Retail R-Series: native or web extension?

Before you start

  • You need to be an Owner or Admin in Wrapped (see Team members and roles).
  • Set up gift cards in Lightspeed. In R-Series, go to Customers › Gift Cards and open the gift card settings.
  • Check your gift card limits. Wrapped changes balances in Lightspeed by loading or removing an amount, so limits that are too tight can block those changes. We recommend a minimum of $1 or less and a maximum of at least $1,000, or higher than your largest gift card.
  • You need admin access in Lightspeed R-Series to approve apps.

Connect and choose native gift cards

    1. In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels (open) and select Add sales channel.
    2. Choose Lightspeed Retail (R-Series), sign in to Lightspeed and approve access.
    3. Back on Sales channels, select Settings on the new R-Series channel.
    4. Under How staff use gift cards, choose Lightspeed's built-in gift cards.
    5. Leave Gift card product ID and Wrapped gift card payment type ID as Wrapped filled them in.
    6. Choose a Lightspeed location for gift card adjustments and a Lightspeed employee for gift card adjustments.
    7. Set Number of Lightspeed registers in this shop to your real number of registers.
    8. Select Save.
    9. Turn on the switch next to the R-Series channel. It changes from Disabled to Enabled.

The setup checklist and the Wrapped Gift Cards custom menu button are only for the web extension. You don't need them with native gift cards.

What Wrapped creates in Lightspeed

  • An item called Wrapped Gift Card and a payment type called Wrapped Gift Cards, created when you connect.
  • A Lightspeed gift card for every Wrapped gift card issued outside Lightspeed (your web store, Shopify, the Wrapped dashboard, batches, automations), with the same code and the description "Synced from Wrapped".
  • A completed sale for every balance change Wrapped writes to Lightspeed. Lightspeed needs each gift card change to belong to a sale, so Wrapped creates one at the location and as the employee you chose. These sales have no items. They pair a gift card payment with an equal and opposite Wrapped Gift Cards payment, so they total $0. You'll see them in Lightspeed's sales history, and Wrapped ignores them when it reads your sales.

How balances stay in sync

Where the change happensWhat happens
A gift card is sold, reloaded, redeemed or refunded to at the R-Series registerWrapped reads the completed sale (it checks for new sales every couple of minutes) and sets the card's Wrapped balance to match Lightspeed, then syncs your other channels
Online, in the Wrapped dashboard, or another sales channelWrapped writes the change to Lightspeed with a $0 sale as described above
A card is voided, deleted or expires in WrappedWrapped sets its Lightspeed balance to $0. The card isn't deleted in Lightspeed
A balance is edited directly in Lightspeed's gift card screensNot picked up. Only balance changes that belong to a sale sync. Correct balances with Adjust balance in Wrapped (see Adjust a gift card's balance)

Because Lightspeed allows only a few gift card updates each minute, changes coming from Wrapped can take longer to reach the register when many cards change at once, for example after a batch or a promotion. Changes made at the register reach Wrapped in the usual few minutes.

Test the connection

    1. In Wrapped, go to Gift cards › All gift cards, select Issue gift card, enter a small value and select Issue gift card. Copy the code.
    2. Wait a few minutes while Wrapped creates the card in Lightspeed.
    3. In Lightspeed, start a new sale with any item, select Payment, then Gift Card.
    4. Enter the code and select Go. You should see the balance you issued.
    5. Cancel the payment and the sale without charging the card.
    6. In Wrapped, open the test card and delete it (Delete gift card). Wrapped sets its Lightspeed balance to $0 and removes it from reporting.

Common questions

I already have Lightspeed gift cards. Are they imported?

Not automatically. Redeeming a Lightspeed gift card that isn't in Wrapped doesn't create or update anything in Wrapped. Ask the Wrapped team to import your active Lightspeed gift cards (see Getting help), or import them from a file (see Import existing gift cards from a CSV file).

Why do I see $0 sales in Lightspeed I didn't make?

Those are the sales Wrapped creates to change gift card balances, as described above. They don't affect your takings.

A gift card issued online isn't in Lightspeed yet.

It's probably waiting its turn within Lightspeed's limits. Check the card in Wrapped: if it shows a sync error, see Fixing gift card sync errors.

Do I connect each shop separately?

No. One connection covers your whole Lightspeed R-Series account. Balance-change sales are all created at the one location you choose, but the gift cards work at every shop.
