Yes, you can use physical gift cards with Wrapped. The code printed on the card is a normal Wrapped gift card: once it has value, it's in every connected sales channel, so it can be spent at your registers and online, and its balance stays in sync everywhere. Wrapped doesn't print cards itself. You generate the codes in Wrapped and send them to a card printer of your choice, or keep using the cards you already have if their codes meet your sales channels' rules.

Requirements

Physical gift card codes must be:

  • Random, not sequential, so they can't be guessed.
  • Letters and numbers, at least 8 characters.
  • Within the rules of every sales channel you use, for example 16 digits for Square, or 8 to 20 characters for Shopify. Codes that break a channel's rules fail to sync to that channel. See Gift card code format and each platform's rules.
  • In a barcode or QR code that contains the plain code, not a web address, so staff can scan it at the register. See Barcode requirements for printed cards and scanners.

How a physical card is sold

New printed cards are usually created in Wrapped with no value. They stay Empty and aren't in your sales channels until they're loaded. You can load a card in two ways:

  • At the register: staff scan or type the card's code when selling it, using your POS's normal gift card sale. The value is added to the matching card and synced to your other channels. The steps depend on your POS: see the staff guide for your sales channel, such as X-Series, R-Series (native), O-Series, K-Series, L-Series or Heartland.
  • From the dashboard: click Issue gift card, replace the code with the one printed on the card, enter the value and issue it. See Issue a gift card from the dashboard.

How a physical card is redeemed

  • In store: staff scan the barcode or QR code, or type the code, and take the payment as they would for any gift card.
  • Online: the customer types the code printed on the card at checkout.

The new balance syncs to your other sales channels, usually within a few minutes.

Common questions

Does Wrapped print cards?

No. Wrapped has preferred printers, Kwikcards for New Zealand and Australia and Plastic Printers for North America and the rest of the world, but any printer works. See Ordering printed gift cards.

Do printed cards count toward my plan?

Not when you create the codes or order the cards. Each card counts in the billing period it's first loaded with value. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.

Can a physical card be topped up?

Yes, in any channel that allows gift card reloads, or with Adjust balance in Wrapped.

Can customers check the balance of a physical card?

Yes, by entering the code on your check balance page. See The check balance page.
