You can usually keep your existing printed gift cards. Cards customers already hold can be imported into Wrapped with their codes and balances, so they keep working in every sales channel. Unsold cards don't need importing: load each one when you sell it. This works as long as the codes meet your sales channels' rules and the barcode contains the code (or you save what the barcode contains).
Check your cards first
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| The codes are random, not sequential | Sequential codes are easy to guess. If yours are sequential, consider replacing the cards. |
| The codes meet every sales channel's rules | For example 8 to 20 characters for Shopify or 16 digits for Square. A code that breaks a channel's rules can't be created in that channel. See Gift card code format and each platform's rules. |
| Scanning a card gives exactly the printed code | If it gives a web address or a different number, see "Cards whose barcode holds something else" below. |
Cards customers already hold
- Connect and turn on all your sales channels in Wrapped.
- Export the cards from your old system: each card's code, current balance and original value, plus expiry date, issue date and customer details if you have them.
- Put them in a CSV file with the columns Code, Balance, InitialAmount and any of ExpiresAt, IssuedDate, RecipientName, RecipientEmail, AlternateLookupCode and Note.
- Import the file in Gift cards › All gift cards › Import / Export › Import from CSV file. Turn on Never send emails for this batch if you don't want customers emailed about these cards later.
- Spot-check a few cards: search for each code and check its activity shows it was created in each sales channel.
Importing is free during your free trial. See Import existing gift cards from a CSV file for the full steps, the 10,000-row limit and what happens to codes that already exist.
Unsold cards
Cards that haven't been sold have no balance, so there's nothing to import. When you sell one, load it:
- At the register, by selling it with its code as described in your POS's selling guide, or
- From the dashboard, with Issue gift card, typing the printed code. See Issue a gift card from the dashboard.
Wrapped then creates the card in every sales channel.
Cards whose barcode holds something else
Some cards have a web address or a different number in the barcode, for example some cards made for Lightspeed K-Series. For each card, put what the barcode contains in the AlternateLookupCode column when you import. Wrapped then finds the card from either value wherever Wrapped does the lookup: the Lightspeed register screens Wrapped provides (R-Series web extension, K-Series and L-Series), the Redeem app and the check balance page.
At checkouts that use a channel's own gift cards, such as Shopify checkout, only the card's Code works. Staff and customers type the printed code there.
To find out what a barcode contains, scan the card into a text editor. See Barcode requirements for printed cards and scanners.
Codes that don't meet a sales channel's rules
A card whose code breaks a channel's rules shows a sync error for that channel but still works in your other channels. Your options:
- Accept that those cards only work in some channels, and tell staff.
- Replace them as customers use them. Issue a new card with a valid code, give it the old card's balance, and void the old card. See Void or delete a gift card.
- Replace all of them with newly printed cards. See Ordering printed gift cards.
Cards that already exist in a sales channel
- Shopify: Shopify doesn't share full codes for existing gift cards, so they can't be imported by CSV. See Bring existing Shopify gift cards into Wrapped.
- Lightspeed X-Series, R-Series, BigCommerce, WooCommerce and Heartland Retail: Wrapped support can bring in the active gift cards already in these systems. Contact support before importing them yourself, to avoid duplicates.
Common questions
Do imported cards count toward my plan?
Cards imported during your free trial don't count. After the trial, cards imported with a balance usually count in that billing period. Contact the Wrapped team before a large import. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
Do I need to reprint cards to use Wrapped?
Not if the codes meet your channels' rules and the barcodes contain the code, or you save the barcode value as an AlternateLookupCode.
Will customers notice anything?
Their cards keep the same code and balance. If a card has a recipient email, they may receive Wrapped emails later, such as balance updates, unless you turned emails off for the import.
