Testing gift cards before you go live

How to test Wrapped before launch - what must be in place first, a checklist for selling, redeeming and syncing in each channel, how to preview emails without creating a gift card, why Shopify development stores can't test gift card checkout, and how test cards affect your plan.

Updated September 19, 2026

Test Wrapped with small, real transactions in each sales channel you've connected: sell a gift card, redeem part of it somewhere else, and check the balance matches everywhere. Your gift card program must be live for orders to be processed, so choose your plan first. Afterwards, remove your test cards so they don't show up in reports.

Shopify development stores don't allow gift cards at checkout, and there's no sandbox where they work. To test online redemption on Shopify, make a small real redemption on your live store, then correct it by adjusting the balance back or voiding the test card. See Testing gift cards with a Shopify development store.

Before you test

CheckWhy it matters
You've chosen a plan (your trial has started) and your program is liveUntil your program is live, orders from your sales channels aren't processed and no emails are sent. If you see Turn on gift cards, select it.
The channel is connected and turned on, with every Setup step doneCheck Settings › Sales channels. A channel that's turned off, or missing setup steps, won't create or redeem gift cards.
The channel was connected before you place the test orderWrapped ignores orders placed before a channel was connected.
Your account isn't under reviewNew website sign-ups can't send emails until Wrapped has reviewed the account. If you see "We're reviewing your account…", emails won't arrive yet.
You use your own email address as the customerTest gift card emails go to real inboxes.

What to test

Work through this for each connected channel. One register or one online store per platform is enough.

    1. Sell a gift card in the channel: ring up the gift card product at the POS, or buy the gift card product online. Use a small amount.
    2. Check it in Wrapped. Within a few seconds the card should appear in Gift cards › All gift cards. Open it and check the amount, the customer, the order link and the timeline. Lightspeed Retail R-Series sales can take up to about 2 minutes.
    3. Check the email. The recipient should get the gift card email in your brand, with the wallet pass buttons.
    4. Check the card exists in your other channels. Look the code up in your other POS or online store, or check the card's timeline in Wrapped for "Created … gift card in …" for each channel.
    5. Redeem part of the balance in a different channel from the one that sold it.
    6. Check the balance in Wrapped and in every channel. It should be the same everywhere.
    7. Try an adjustment from Wrapped. Open the card, select Adjust balance, and check the new balance reaches your channels.

If you sell on the Wrapped web store, also make a small purchase there. See Create your Wrapped web store.

Check your emails and customer pages without creating a card

You don't need a real gift card to see your emails. In Branding › Emails, open an email and use Send a test. It sends what's on screen, saved or not, with a sample card to one inbox, with "[Test]" at the start of the subject. A test email doesn't create a gift card and doesn't count toward your plan. Test emails only work once your program is live and your account isn't under review.

On any real gift card, the More actions () menu also has Preview email and Download PDF.

After testing

Remove your test gift cards so they're kept out of reports and don't use your allowance. Delete them from the gift card's More actions menu, or delete the whole batch if you created them as a batch. See Removing test gift cards before you launch.

Common questions

Do test gift cards count toward my plan's allowance?

Gift cards activated during your free trial don't count. After the trial, a test card counts unless you void or delete it during the same billing period. Hiding a card from reporting doesn't stop it counting. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.

Can I test with a Shopify development store?

You can connect one and test setup, but Shopify development stores don't allow gift cards at checkout. Test online redemption with a small real redemption on your live store, then correct it. See Testing gift cards with a Shopify development store.

Will voiding my test sale at the POS clean it up?

Voiding a gift card sale at the POS brings the card to $0 in Wrapped and disables it, but it stays in your gift card list and reports. To remove a test card from reporting, delete it in Wrapped. See Removing test gift cards before you launch.

Can I test before choosing a plan?

You can set up channels, branding and gift card rules, but orders aren't processed and emails aren't sent until your program is live. Choosing a plan starts your 14-day free trial and turns your program on.

Should I test in a separate Wrapped account?

No. Test in the account you'll use for real. When you go live, disconnect any test channels and connect your live stores in the same account. See the Go-live checklist.
