Gift card designs

How to add, upload, rename, hide, delete and choose the default gift card design on Branding › Designs, the ready-made occasion library, image size and file rules, and where designs appear (gift to a friend page, gift emails and the Shopify gifting widget).

Updated September 19, 2026

Gift card designs are the card artwork buyers choose from when they send a gift card to someone, such as a birthday or thank-you design. The chosen design appears in the gift email. You manage designs on Branding › Designs: upload your own artwork or add ready-made designs from the library in one click.

Where designs appear

  • The gift to a friend page. When you offer more than one design, the customer picks one before sending. The default design is selected for them first. See The gift to a friend page.
  • The gift email. The design the buyer chose appears in the Gift card image block of the email the recipient gets.
  • As a fallback image. When a card has no image of its own and your brand has no Default gift card image, emails use your default design.
  • Shopify's gifting widget. If you use the "Send to a friend" widget on your Shopify gift card product, it offers your designs too. See Add a "Send to a friend" option to your Shopify gift card product.

Web store products use their own product images, set on the product. See Create gift card products for your web store.

Add your own design

    1. Go to Branding › Designs (open). The page is titled Designs and pages.
    2. Select Add design.
    3. In Create your card design, drag and drop an image or choose Select a file.
    4. Enter a Name, for example "Summer".
    5. Save. You see "Design added. Buyers can choose it straight away."

Add a design from the library

Under Design library, ready-made designs are grouped by occasion: General, Birthday, Celebration, Love, Seasonal and Thanks. Click a design to add a copy to your designs. It's offered to buyers straight away, and a tick marks library designs you've already added.

Manage your designs

Each design under Your designs shows Offered to buyers or Hidden, and the default design has a Default badge. Open a design's menu to:

The rest of the Designs page

  • Customer pages links to the Check balance and Gift to a friend page editors, marked Matches brand or Own colours. See The check balance page.

Classic branding

On the classic branding, Branding › Designs lists your gift card assets (check balance page, gift to a friend page, wallet card and PDF). Card designs are managed in the gift to a friend page's settings: open Customize on the gift to a friend page, then manage the card images there, selecting or deselecting designs and uploading your own.

Common questions

Do designs change the gift card in my POS or Shopify?

No. A design is only the picture in the email and on the gifting page. The gift card itself, its code and its balance are the same whichever design is chosen.

What size should my artwork be?

Landscape, around 1200 × 757 pixels, as a PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 5 MB. Other sizes are cropped to fit the card shape.

Can I stop buyers choosing a design without deleting it?

Yes. Use Hide from buyers in the design's menu. You can offer it again with Show to buyers.

Does the customer see a choice if I only have one design?

No. With one design offered, it's used automatically and the design picker isn't shown.

If I delete a design, what happens to cards that used it?

Nothing. Emails and cards already sent with it keep it.
