Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes

How customers add a gift card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, how to design the pass on Branding › Wallet pass (brand matching, colours, logo and strip sizes, labels, barcode type, lock-screen locations), and how passes update when the balance changes.

Customers can keep a gift card on their phone in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Every gift card email has Add to Apple Wallet and Add to Google Wallet buttons. The pass shows the balance, code, expiry date and a barcode, and it updates by itself when the balance changes. You design the pass on Branding › Wallet pass, and it can simply match your brand.

How customers add a pass

  1. The customer opens their gift card email and taps Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Google Wallet.
  2. Their phone adds the pass. There's no app to install.
  3. At the register, they show the pass so staff can scan the barcode, or read out the code. Online, they enter the code at checkout.

The wallet buttons are a required block in gift card and voucher emails, so they can't be removed by accident. The first time a customer taps Add to Apple Wallet for a card, "Pass added to Apple Wallet" appears on that card's timeline in the dashboard.

What the pass shows

Expiry dates are shown in your account's time zone. Voucher passes use fixed labels.

Design your pass

    1. Go to Branding › Wallet pass (open).
    2. Choose your settings (below). The preview on the right shows the pass as you change it.
    3. Select Save. You see "Saved. Passes already on customers' phones are updating now."

Match your brand

The simplest option is to let the pass follow Branding › Brand, so it changes when your brand does. New accounts start with all three switches on.

SwitchWhat it does
Use my brand colourThe pass takes your brand colour, with text picked to stay readable. The Colours section is hidden while it's on.
Use my brand iconYour square Icon from the Brand page appears on the pass and on lock-screen notifications. If you haven't added an icon, your logo is used.
Use my email header imageYour email header image runs across the pass under your name. If your brand has no header image, the pass keeps its own strip.

Colours

With Use my brand colour off, set Pass colour, Text and Labels. If the text is hard to read on the pass colour, a warning says customers may struggle to see their balance.

Images

ImageWhere it showsSize
LogoSquare, top-left of the pass. The same image is used as the pass icon.Cropped and resized to 180 × 180
Strip imageOptional wide image under the header on Apple Wallet. Google Wallet shows it as the pass's main image.Cropped and resized to 1125 × 432

Select Upload or Replace, choose a PNG or JPG, and crop it in the window that opens. Each row is hidden while the matching brand switch supplies that image.

Words on the pass

  • Name on the pass: usually your business name.
  • Balance label, Code label and Expiry label: optional. Leave them empty to use "Balance", "Code" and "Expiry Date".
  • Barcode: QR code, PDF417, Aztec or Code 128 (barcode). QR works with almost every scanner and point of sale. See Barcode type on emails and wallet passes.

Lock-screen reminders

Add places where the pass should appear on a customer's lock screen when they're nearby. Select Add a location, search for your shop or its address, drag the pin onto your door if needed, and enter a Lock-screen message (one line, such as "Use your gift card here"). Apple allows up to ten locations. Lock-screen location reminders are an Apple Wallet feature. Remember to select Save after adding locations.

Passes already on customers' phones

  • Balance changes update the pass automatically. When a card is redeemed, topped up, adjusted or voided, Wrapped updates the pass. Apple Wallet shows a notification like "You have $25.00".
  • Saving your design updates existing passes. After Save, Wrapped updates every pass already on phones over the next few minutes. Under Already-issued passes you can see progress, such as "Updating passes on customers' phones…" or how many passes were updated and when.
  • Update passes on phones now runs the same update without changing anything, for example after you change your brand on Branding › Brand. Saving the Brand page on its own doesn't update passes already on phones; they pick up the new brand the next time they update.
  • Reset to default design clears your colours, images and labels.

Customers need their phone online to receive an update.

Classic branding

On the classic branding, Branding › Wallet pass opens the older pass designer. It has the same settings except the brand switches: colours, a logo (resized to 180 × 180) and strip banner (resized to 1125 × 432), labels and the barcode type, with an iPhone and Android preview.

Common questions

Do wallet passes cost extra?

No. They're included on every plan, and adding a pass doesn't count toward your gift card allowance.

A customer's pass shows an old balance. What can they do?

Passes update when the balance changes, but the phone has to be online to receive it. On iPhone, opening the pass details and pulling down refreshes it. You can also select Update passes on phones now on Branding › Wallet pass. Check the balance on the card's timeline in the dashboard first: a balance changed directly in a sales channel outside an order isn't picked up by Wrapped. See How balance changes sync between Wrapped and your sales channels.

What image size should I upload?

Any reasonably large image works: the logo is cropped to a square and resized to 180 × 180, and the strip to 1125 × 432. A logo with a transparent background looks best. If you use your brand icon, upload it on Branding › Brand as a square PNG.

Can customers add a pass without the email?

The add links are in the email. If a customer has lost the email, resend it from the gift card. See Edit recipient details and resend a gift card email.

Which barcode should I choose?

QR unless your scanner can only read 1D barcodes. Use the same type your staff scan in store. See Barcode requirements for printed cards and scanners.
