Gift card settings

A tour of Settings › Gift card rules (also under Gift cards › Settings) - default expiry, whether expired cards can still be used, changing expiry, the code format for new codes, and the email suppression list - with what each setting affects and what it doesn't.

Updated September 19, 2026

Your account-wide gift card rules live in Settings › Gift card rules. The same page is also at Gift cards › Settings. It has three sections: Expiry, Codes and Email suppression. Each row shows what it's set to now; click Edit to change it. Changes apply to new gift cards from then on. Existing cards keep their expiry dates and codes.

Expiry

RowWhat it controls
New gift cards"Never expire" (the default) or "Expire after N months". Sets the expiry of every new gift card, however it's created: sold in a sales channel, sold on your web store, issued from the dashboard, created through the API or imported without an expiry date.
Expired cardsWhether expired cards can still be used. Choose Let expired regular gift cards still be used and/or Let expired promotional gift cards still be used.
Changing a card's expiryLet your team change a card's expiry. Currently this decides whether a CSV import may change the expiry date of cards that already exist. Changing one card's expiry from its page is available either way.

In the Expiry dialog, choose Gift cards never expire or Gift cards expire and enter Expire after (months) (1 or more), then tick any of the three options and click Save.

Countries have different laws about gift card expiry. Check yours before turning expiry on, and make sure your website, terms and sales channel gift card products say the same thing. For how expiry works in detail, see Gift card expiry.

Codes

Code format shows an example code and a summary, such as "16 characters · a dash every four". It controls how Wrapped generates new codes: for cards sold in your sales channels where Wrapped makes the code, dashboard issues, batches, the web store and the API. Existing codes never change, and codes you type or import yourself aren't reformatted.

In the Code format dialog:

FieldWhat it does
LengthThe number of random characters, not counting the prefix or dashes. At least 8. The default is 16.
Add a dash every four charactersAdds dashes to split the code into groups. On by default, which gives codes like A1B2-C3D4-E5F6-G7H8.
PrefixOptional text added to the start of every new code, such as GC.
Characters to useOptional. The characters random codes are made from. Leave it empty for the default set, capital letters A-Z and digits 0-9.

Your sales channels have their own rules about code length and characters. A code that breaks a channel's rules fails to sync to that channel. Check Gift card code format and each platform's rules before you change the format.

Email suppression

Suppressed addresses is a list of email addresses that never receive gift card emails from Wrapped. Use it for addresses that shouldn't be emailed, such as your own staff or a corporate buyer who hands out cards themselves. Click Edit, enter one email address per line and click Save.

To stop emails for a single card instead, open the card and turn Email notifications off. To stop emails for a whole import, use Never send emails for this batch when you import. To stop one kind of email for everyone, turn it off in Branding › Emails.

Common questions

I changed the expiry setting. Do my existing cards change?

No. The setting applies to gift cards created after you save it. To change an existing card, open it and use Expires › Change. See Gift card expiry.

I changed the code format. Why do old cards still have the old format?

Codes never change once issued, because customers already hold them. Only new codes use the new format.

Who can change these settings?

Team members who can open Settings. Members and Read-only users only see Gift cards. See Team members and roles.

Do these settings change anything in Shopify or Lightspeed?

Expiry dates are sent along with new cards to channels that support them, such as Shopify. The code format only affects codes Wrapped generates. Your sales channels' own gift card settings aren't changed, so keep them consistent yourself.
