You connect BigCommerce by installing the Wrapped app on your store from Settings › Sales channels in Wrapped, then turning the sales channel on. Wrapped gift cards are created in BigCommerce as gift certificates with the same code, so customers redeem them in BigCommerce's gift certificate field at checkout. To sell Wrapped gift cards in BigCommerce, you also create a product with the SKU wrapped_giftcard.
How gift cards work in BigCommerce
- Every Wrapped gift card becomes a BigCommerce gift certificate with the same code, the card's current balance, its currency and, if the card expires, its expiry date.
- The recipient on the certificate is the gift card's recipient. If a card has no recipient email, the certificate shows placeholder@wrappedgiftcards.com. The sender is the person who gifted the card, or your business name and email.
- When a customer pays with a gift certificate, Wrapped deducts the amount used from the gift card once the order is paid, and syncs the new balance to your other sales channels.
- Whenever the balance changes (a redemption online or in store, or Adjust balance in Wrapped), Wrapped deletes the gift certificate and creates a new one with the same code for the new balance. In BigCommerce, the certificate's amount therefore shows the current balance, not the original value.
- BigCommerce's own gift certificates bought in your store are also brought into Wrapped, including the recipient, sender and message, and synced to your other sales channels.
Which orders Wrapped processes
Wrapped creates and redeems gift cards once an order is paid:
| BigCommerce order | What Wrapped does |
|---|---|
| Status Awaiting Fulfillment, or payment captured or paid | Processes the order |
| Paid by bank transfer, electronic funds transfer or direct credit | Processes the order once you mark it Shipped or Completed |
| Manual Verification Required | Waits until the order moves to a paid status |
| Cancelled or Declined | Voids gift cards bought on the order and puts back any gift card amount used on it |
| Refunded | Doesn't change gift cards automatically. Use Adjust balance or void the card in Wrapped. |
Before you start
- You need to be an Owner or Admin in Wrapped.
- Start from Wrapped, logged in to the right Wrapped account, so the store is connected to that account. Installing the app from the BigCommerce marketplace without starting in Wrapped can create a new, separate Wrapped account.
Step 1: Install the Wrapped app
- In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels and select Add sales channel.
- Choose BigCommerce. You're taken to the Wrapped app in the BigCommerce app marketplace.
- Log in to your BigCommerce store if asked, and install the app.
- Accept the permissions the app asks for.
- You're returned to Wrapped. If you haven't finished your Wrapped profile yet, you're asked to do that first.
- In Settings › Sales channels, turn on the switch next to the BigCommerce sales channel. Wrapped ignores orders from a sales channel that's turned off.
Wrapped registers for your BigCommerce order notifications automatically when you install the app, and again whenever you turn the sales channel on.
After installing, you can also open Wrapped from the Apps area of your BigCommerce control panel. The store owner is signed in as an Owner. Other BigCommerce users who open the app are added to your Wrapped team as Members, who can only see Gift cards. See Team members and roles.
Step 2: Create a gift card product
- In BigCommerce, create a new product and set the product type to Digital.
- Set the SKU to wrapped_giftcard.
- Set the tax class to Non-Taxable Products.
- Add a variant for each gift card amount you want to sell, with the price set to that amount. Make sure each variant's SKU still contains wrapped_giftcard, for example wrapped_giftcard-50.
- Add images and a description, and make the product visible on your storefront.
When a paid order contains this product, Wrapped creates one gift card per item (a quantity of two makes two cards) for the price paid, creates its gift certificate in BigCommerce, and emails the gift card to the billing email on the order.
Step 3: Test the connection
- In Wrapped, go to Gift cards › All gift cards and select Issue gift card. Enter a small value and issue it. Copy the code.
- In your BigCommerce control panel, open your gift certificates and search for the code. You should see a certificate for the card's value.
- Delete the test card in Wrapped. Then check the gift certificate in BigCommerce and delete it there if it still has a value.
Online redemptions can't be tested without a real order, so test with a small real order and correct it afterwards. See Testing gift cards before you go live.
Uninstalling the Wrapped app from BigCommerce cancels your Wrapped account, which stops gift cards syncing across all your sales channels, not just BigCommerce. To stop syncing only this store, turn the sales channel off or disconnect it in Settings › Sales channels, and contact Wrapped support before uninstalling. See Disconnect or replace a sales channel.
Common questions
A customer's gift card code isn't accepted at checkout
Check that a gift certificate with that code exists in BigCommerce and has a balance. If it doesn't, open the card in Wrapped and choose Re-sync balance to sales channels from the actions menu. See Fixing gift card sync errors and A gift card code isn't accepted at the register or checkout.
A gift card wasn't created for a BigCommerce order
Check the order's status is one Wrapped processes (see the table above), that the product's SKU contains wrapped_giftcard, and that the sales channel is turned on. Orders placed before you connected aren't processed. See A gift card wasn't created for an order.
Why do some gift certificates show placeholder@wrappedgiftcards.com?
BigCommerce requires a recipient email on every gift certificate. When a Wrapped gift card has no recipient email, for example a card sold in store without a customer, Wrapped uses this placeholder address.
What happens if I void or delete a gift card?
Wrapped takes the value off the card and removes the gift certificate's value in BigCommerce. Check your gift certificates afterwards, and delete the certificate if it still has a value.
Are gift cards I already have added to BigCommerce when I connect?
Not straight away. Wrapped creates a card's gift certificate when the card is issued or its balance changes. To add an existing card now, open it and choose Re-sync balance to sales channels.
Do gift cards sold on BigCommerce count toward my plan?
Yes. Each new gift card counts toward your monthly gift card allowance. See How the monthly gift card allowance works.
