Use Wrapped with Smart Coupons for WooCommerce

How to set up Wrapped with the paid Smart Coupons for WooCommerce extension, how Wrapped gift cards become coupons that customers apply in the coupon field, what syncs, and how to test it.

Updated September 19, 2026

With the paid Smart Coupons for WooCommerce extension, every Wrapped gift card is created in WooCommerce as a coupon whose code is the gift card code and whose amount is the balance. Customers type the code into the normal coupon field at checkout, and it can be combined with other coupons. Any code format works. For most stores the free Wrapped Gift Card Redemption plugin is simpler (see Connect WooCommerce).

Before you start

  • Install and activate Smart Coupons for WooCommerce from woocommerce.com. Wrapped creates coupons through the features it adds to the WooCommerce API.
  • Connect your store and turn the sales channel on (see Connect WooCommerce, step 1).

Set up

    1. In Wrapped, go to Settings › Sales channels, and on your WooCommerce channel select Settings.
    2. Under Plugin, select Smart Coupons for WooCommerce, then select Save.
    3. Create a gift card product with the SKU wrapped_giftcard, exactly as described in Connect WooCommerce, step 3.
    4. Test it (below).

Sell gift cards through the wrapped_giftcard product. Gift cards sold through Smart Coupons' own gift card products aren't brought into Wrapped.

What syncs

What happensResult
A customer buys the wrapped_giftcard product and the order is paid (Processing or Completed)Wrapped creates the gift card, emails it to the billing email address, and creates the matching coupon in WooCommerce
A gift card is issued in Wrapped or another channelWrapped creates a Smart Coupons coupon with the same code and the card's balance
A customer applies the code as a coupon and the order is paidWrapped records a redemption for the coupon's discount (including any tax on the discount), up to the card's balance, and passes the new balance to your other channels
A balance changes in Wrapped or another channelWrapped deletes the coupon and creates a new one with the same code and the new amount
The order is CancelledGift cards bought on it are voided, and redemptions recorded for it are reversed
You change a coupon's amount directly in WooCommerceNot picked up. Adjust balances in Wrapped instead.

WooCommerce stores coupon codes in lowercase. Wrapped matches codes regardless of case, so a customer can type the code either way.

If a gift card has an expiry date, Wrapped sets it as the coupon's expiry, unless your gift card rules allow expired cards to be used.

Test it

    1. In Wrapped, go to Gift cards › All gift cards, select Issue gift card, and issue a small card. Copy its code.
    2. Wait a minute, then check the coupon exists in WordPress under Marketing › Coupons.
    3. Add an item to your cart and apply the code in the coupon field. Check the discount is applied.
    4. Complete the order with a test payment and check the balance goes down in Wrapped once the order is paid.
    5. Delete the test card in Wrapped ( menu › Delete gift card).

Common questions

Can customers combine a gift card with a discount coupon?

Yes. The gift card is a coupon, so WooCommerce applies it alongside other coupons according to your coupon settings.

Is there a code format requirement?

No. Smart Coupons accepts any code, so imported physical cards and codes from your POS work too.

A customer used only part of their gift card. What happens to the rest?

Wrapped records the amount actually discounted on the order. The remaining balance stays on the card, and Wrapped updates the coupon in WooCommerce to match.

Can I import coupons I created in Smart Coupons before using Wrapped?

They aren't imported automatically. See Import existing gift cards from a CSV file.
